Introduction
Feel sick of the theme that you have on your iPod? Want to go back to the original theme? Need to take your iPod into Apple for servicing?
You need to remove the changes done to your iPod with iPodWizard.
Method (iTunes 7.1+)
Alternative 1: Restoring (Try First!!!)
Because Apple built the iPod updater into iTunes 7, restoring your iPod got a lot easier.
While the firmware on your iPod is modified, the firmware in iTunes remains clean.
To remove changes, restore your iPod. (see below)
- Note: Restoring your iPod will delete all the data on your iPod and sync it back from your iTunes.
Please make the appropriate backups if you have valuable information on your iPod's hard drive.
Alternative 2: Updating (Not Common)
Step 1: Getting a fresh firmware file
Choose either step 1a or step 1b (not both):
Step 1a: Downloading firmware
Download a fresh firmware file from Apple.com:
Rename the .ipsw file to a .zip file and extract the contents.
Step 1b: Local firmware
Go to the following folder (replacing USER with the name of the user of the computer:
C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
Find the file labelled "ipod_X.X.X" (depending on your firmware version), rename it to a .zip file, and extract the contents.
Step 2: Loading the firmware onto the iPod
Put your iPod in Forced Disk Mode, plug it into the computer, and close iTunes.
Open iPodWizard and choose the Firmware File editing mode (from the drop down box). Navigate to the firmware file you extracted and click open. Hit "Write to iPod".
- If your iPod is a 2G Mini, Nano or 5G, leave your iPod connected so it can reflash.
- If your iPod is a 1-4G, 1G Mini or Photo/Color, disconnect it from the PC and connect it to a wall charger. The firmware will reflash.
Your iPod is now clean of mods!
Method (iTunes 7.0 and below - older iPods)
Step 1: Getting a fresh updater
First, you will need to have a fresh (unaltered, unmodded, clean) iPod Updater on your PC. This can be done by either reinstalling the Updater from the original Setup.exe, or downloading a new one from here.
Install the iPod Updater and remember where it is located.
Step 2: Downgrade firmware
With your iPod connected, open up iPodWizard and find the 'Downgrade Firmware' button (figure 1). Press it once, read the confirmation pop-up, and then close iPodWizard.
What this has done is fooled your iPod Updater into thinking that the firmware on your iPod is not up-to-date, and therefore letting you update without having to restore and lose all your music.
Step 3: Update iPod
Open up the iPod Updater that you freshly installed, and you should see the 'Update' button available (as in figure 2).
Click 'Update', and then wait for the Updater to reinstall the firmware to your iPod.
Note: This will remove any alternate firmware, such as iPodLinux/Rockbox.
